In conjunction with Board Failte, Carrickmacross Tourist Association promotes and markets the picturesque town of Carrickmacross, to a National and European scale. The Association was set up about 20 years ago by guest-house owners, to put Carrickmacross on the map and encourage people to visit the town. In the beginning fishermen were the main target as there is over 40 lakes in the area. They ran fishing competitions annually for 12 years and drew as many as 90 anglers to the town on most occasions. The association then decided to explore the European market. In doing this they produced brochures of the town in many languages and distributed them at holiday fairs in Rotterdam, Germany and France. They also produced postcards with scenes of the town and surrounding areas, which sold exceptionally well. The association is involved with the Tidy Towns committee and is highly supportive of the work they carry out. The association take part in the St. Patrick's Day Parade each year and help out at many events throughout the year; e.g. Pancake night, welcoming nights for twinning committees and the Senior Citizens Party to name but a few. The Carrickmacross U.D.C. are always on hand to support the Tourist Association and lend whatever financial assistance they can, in whatever venture the Association intend carrying out. |
