County Monaghan Town Implements Ground-breaking Scheme to Tackle Plastic Waste

20190930 151554The Carrickmacross Tidy Town Committee officially launched Ireland’s first deposit return Reverse Vending Machine on the 30th of September. The initiative will allow users to insert their used plastic bottles into the machine and redeem a 10 cent voucher per bottle. The plastic bottles will then be taken away by local company Shabra Plastics for processing and re-cycling.

Minister Humphreys welcomed the initiative saying: “Everybody will be aware that there has been growing public concern in relation to environmental issues in the last few years. There has also been an acknowledgment that we all have to play our part – Governments, businesses and citizens around the world – to mitigate the impacts of climate change.

“I would like to congratulate the Carrickmacross Tidy Town Committee, together with the local business community, for leading the way at local level in Ireland. This new reverse vending machine is a simple idea but a brilliant one, which will facilitate and incentivise people living locally to get on board with the fight against plastic waste. If you want people to take action, you have to make it easy for them, and that is exactly what Carrickmacross is doing here. Without a doubt, we have a model here that should be replicated in other towns and villages across the country.”

Committee member Andrew Spare, who spearheaded the initiative, first saw the reverse vending machines in operation in Germany and was keen to get one operational in Carrickmacross to reduce waste and encourage the public to recycle used bottles

The T-70 Reverse Vending machine is produced by Tomra, who have supplied over 83000 machines world wide; Carrickmacross is their first Irish installation. The state-of-the-art machine reads bar codes and bottle shapes and has the ability to recognise acceptable bottles for re-cycling.

The machine, located in Market Square Shopping Centre, is sponsored by Monaghan County Council,  Monaghan County Council Environmental Section, Shabra Plastics & Re-Cycling, Quinn Packaging Ltd and O’Gorman’s Supervalu.

DrumgossattRoadA decision was made to reopen the LP4900 local road at Drumgossat with immediate effect, following a meeting today (28 August 2019) between representatives of Monaghan County Council, the Department of Communications, Climate Action and Environment, the Environmental Protection Agency, Irish Public Bodies Ltd., together with mining consultants, Wardell Armstrong and Ove Arup & Partners Ltd.
The road had been closed to public access since December 2018, following the emergence of a crownhole, 35 metres from the roadside. Since then an extensive programme of safety measures has been put in place, including the installation of 8 extensometers to monitor ground conditions along the LP4900. Additional measures will also be put in place in the coming months along the R179 and LP4900 to monitor ground conditions into the future.
Works on demolishing structures above the disused underground mine will commence shortly.
Monaghan County Council apologises to all effected by the road closures, but emphasises that public safety was its prime consideration at all times.

The RSA’s free ‘Check it Fits’ service will be checking child car seats and restraints on Monday 9th September in SuperValu in Monaghan Town and on Tuesday 10th September in SuperValu Carrickmacross, from 10am to 5.30pm each day.

VintageDay2019Sunday the 1st of September can only mean one thing……..
It’s time for Carrickmacross Vintage Club 7th annual field day.

There will be BIG BAND DANCING this year to MICK FLAVIN and his band, so why not come out and show off your fancy footwork. We hope to have a large range of vintage cars, tractors, lorries and bikes on display. As well as a variety of stalls and auto jumble for everyone to delve into, and hopefully find a bargain or two.

The 7th annual Jigger Run, a Honda 50 run, in memory of club member Frank O’Connor, will leave from The Workhouse and enjoy a scenic route before returning to the show field. This run is open to bikes of all sizes.

The tug-of-war competition, in memory of club member Henry Babington, will be taking place in the field in the late afternoon, when we hope to have a good number of teams to take up the rope. If you want to get a team together (8 members and a coach) please contact John-Joe Cunningham on 087-2371221.

The dog show is being adjudicated by an independent judge, and if previous years are anything to go by, is going to attract a large number of people and their canine companion. The competition is open to all who wish to partake and display their dogs.

The pre-1980 tractor run attracted a good number of tractors last year and we hope to improve on it this year. So, if you are sick of been overshadowed by high-powered four-wheel drives then this is the event for you. It will leave the Workhouse on a local run before returning to show off your pride and joy in the field.

But we certainly can’t forget our younger vintage enthusiasts, there will bouncy castles, obstacle courses and games to entertain them.
We hope that 2019 will be the year of Land Rover in the field, with all vintage models welcome on the day.

Tickets will be on sale shortly for our raffle with the lucky winners being drawn in the field at the end of the day.

Keep an eye out for further developments in relation to our field day on their Facebook page:

For further information or if you wish to have a stall at our event please contact our Chairman John-Joe Cunningham on 087-2371221 or Secretary Teresa McCaffrey on 087-7164565.
